Όπως κάθε χρόνο, το National Geographic ανοίγει φωτογραφία του ανταγωνισμού για τους οπαδούς σε όλο τον κόσμο, με τέσσερις κατηγορίες για το διαγωνισμό: τοπία, περιβαλλοντικά αίτια, δράσης και πορτρέτα των ζώων. Η ευκαιρία για τους λάτρεις της φύσης και της φωτογραφίας να θαυμάσουν ασυνήθιστη ή μεγαλοπρεπή σκηνές. Να σημειωθεί ότι ο νικητής κάθε κατηγορίας θα κερδίσουν ένα 10 ημερών ταξίδι στην Γκαλαπάγκος και δύο χαρτοφυλάκια δημοσιεύτηκε από το National Geographic.
